MALAISE, WILLY J., FRANCXNE MALAISSE-LAGAE, SUZANNE KING, ANII PETER H. WRIGHT. Efect of growth hormone on insulin secretion. Am. J. Physiol. 215(2) : 4-23-428. 1968.pInsulin secretion by pancreatic tissue or isolated islets of the normal rat is not affected by addition of ovine or rat growth hormone to the incubation medium. Pancreatic tissue removed from hypophysectomized rats secretes an abnormally low amount of insulin in response to stimulation by glucose; such secretion rises towards the normal after treatment of the rat for 4 days with ovine growth hormone in vivo. Implantation of a growth hormone-secreting tumor into the normal rat increases rate of growth, the store of pancreatic insulin, and the rate of insulin secretion induced by glucose in vitro. These findings are discussed and it is suggested that growth hormone may play a role in the normal development of islet function.

The Effect of Intravascular Injection of Ghrelin on the Mean Plasma Concentrations of Insulin and ACTH in Immature Camels Fed with Diets Containing Different Levels of their Energy Requirements

Introduction: Ghrelin is a peptide hormone secreted from the stomach with both endocrine and paracrine effects. Ghrelin and its mRNA as well as growth hormone (GH) secretagogue receptor mRNAs are expressed in the pancreas and islet cells and regulate insulin release. Also the immounoreactivity of ghrelin is proved to be high in the hypothalamus and parts of the brain responsible for the re...

Effect of Six Months of Aerobic Exercise on Serum Levels of Insulin, Growth Hormone and Insulin-Like Growth Hormone 1 in Sedentary Obese Women

ABSTRACT            Background and Objectives: Inactivity, obesity and hormone disorders can lead to various diseases in obese and non-athletic individuals. The objective of this study was to investigate effects of six months of aerobic exercise on serum levels of insulin, growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth hormone 1 (IGF-1) in sedent...

A Review on the Effect of Arginine on Growth Performance, Meat Quality, Intestine Morphology, and Immune System of Broiler Chickens

For chickens, arginine considered an essential amino acid due to the lack of urea cycle in birds. Arginine deficiency causes growth retardation, higher prevalence of disease due to the malfunction of immune system, and lower gastrointestinal capacity. However, higher levels of arginine in the diet improved growth performance, muscle hypertrophy, and meat quality. Arginine reduces carcass fat ac...

The effect of ghrelin on Kiss-1 and KissR gene transcription and insulin secretion in rat islets of Langerhans and CRI-D2 cell line

Objective(s): Ghrelin is a peptide hormone that has been shown to have numerous central and peripheral effects. The central effects including GH secretion, food intake, and energy homeostasis are partly mediated by Kiss1- KissR signaling pathway. Ghrelin and its receptor are also expressed in the pancreatic islets. Ghrelin is one of the key metabolic factors controlling insulin secretion from t...
